About Image to Base64

Base64 lets you embed a small image directly inside your code as text, so the browser does not need a separate request to load it. This tool reads your image and produces a data URL, which you can drop into an img tag src or a CSS background.

Embedding works best for small images like icons. Large images produce very long strings and are usually better left as separate files.

How to Use

  1. Drop in or choose an image.
  2. Decide whether to include the data URI prefix.
  3. Copy the Base64 string.
  4. Paste it into your HTML img src or CSS background.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the data URI prefix?

It is the part at the start, like data:image/png;base64, that tells the browser what kind of data follows. Keep it on to paste directly into HTML or CSS, or turn it off to get just the raw Base64.

Should I embed large images this way?

Usually no. Base64 makes the data about a third larger and bloats your code, so it is best for small icons rather than big photos.

Is my image private?

Yes. The encoding runs in your browser and your image never leaves your device.
