The moment your product touches money, the rules change. Payments, payouts, subscriptions, marketplaces, and anything fintech come with providers to choose, architecture to get right, fraud to design against, and compliance you cannot hand-wave. I help you navigate it: picking the right processor and model, designing money flows that are correct and auditable, and keeping the compliance side from becoming a trap.

The goal is to move quickly without building something you will have to unwind when a regulator or your bank asks questions.

What it covers

  • Choosing the right payment processor and model for your case
  • Designing money flows that are correct, auditable, and reconcilable
  • Subscriptions, marketplaces, split payments, and payouts done right
  • Fraud and chargeback defenses built in from the start
  • Where PCI, KYC, AML, and licensing actually apply to you
  • Keeping sensitive financial data handled safely
  • Avoiding the architecture mistakes that are painful to unwind
  • Knowing when you need a lawyer or a licensed partner, not just an engineer

Who it’s for

  • Startups adding payments, billing, or payouts
  • Marketplaces and platforms moving money between parties
  • Fintech founders who need a technical head who knows the landmines

What you get

  • A recommended payments architecture and provider choice
  • A clear map of the money flows and how they reconcile
  • A fraud and risk approach sized to your model
  • A plain read on which regulations actually touch you
  • A build plan, or hands-on help building it

How it works

  1. 1

    Understand the money

We map exactly how money will move through your product and who the parties are.

  2. 2

    Choose the stack

I recommend the processor, model, and architecture that fit, and flag the ones that would trap you.

  3. 3

    Design the flows

I design money flows that are correct, auditable, and built to reconcile.

  4. 4

    Design for risk

We build in fraud defenses and figure out which compliance actually applies.

  5. 5

    Build or guide

I either build it with you or guide your team, and flag where you need a lawyer or licensed partner.

Getting money movement right the first time

Payments punish mistakes that other software forgives. A money flow that almost reconciles, a fraud model bolted on after the first wave of chargebacks, a provider chosen before anyone understood the margins: these are expensive to unwind once real transactions are running through them. The work up front is unglamorous and it is exactly where the value is, mapping precisely how money moves, who the parties are, and where the regulatory lines fall before a line of code is written.

The technical design cannot be separated from the risk and compliance side, which is why this sits close to security and compliance work, and the money flows themselves have to be built to be auditable and reliable, which is careful software and data engineering. I am explicit about where you need a lawyer or a licensed partner rather than an engineer, because the fastest way to get hurt in fintech is to treat a legal question as a technical one.

Why work with me

I’m Matt George, a fractional CTO for SMBs and early-stage startups and the founder of the venture-backed legal-tech company Injuria.ai. I have built and shipped real products end to end, from scrappy MVPs to data and AI infrastructure running in production, so the advice here comes from doing the work rather than talking about it. You get a senior technical partner with nothing to sell you, no vendor kickbacks, and a bias toward shipping.

FAQ

Are you a lawyer or compliance officer?

No, and I will be clear about where you need one. My job is the technical side and knowing where the legal and licensing landmines are so you bring the right expert in on time.

Which payment provider should we use?

It depends on your model, geography, and margins. I have no provider I am paid to push, so the recommendation is based on your case, not a partnership.

Can you help with marketplaces and split payments?

Yes. Multi-party flows, payouts, and splits are exactly where the hard architecture and compliance questions live, and where getting it wrong is expensive.

How do we handle fraud?

You design for it from the start rather than bolting it on after the first wave. I build fraud and chargeback defenses into the architecture and the money flows.
