About Statescape

Statescape is a free US map maker that turns a simple table of states into a filled choropleth map, the kind where each state is shaded by its value. Paste a list of states with a frequency and a percentage, and the map colors every state on a smooth scale and prints the number directly on top, something the native map chart in Google Sheets and Excel cannot do.

It is built for the moment you have a breakdown by state, survey responses, customers, event attendees, sign ups, and you want a clean graphic you can drop into a slide, a report, or a social post. Small northeastern states that are too tiny to label get neat callout labels in the margin, so values like Rhode Island and DC are always readable.

Everything happens in your browser. Your data never leaves your device, there is no sign up, and the download is a crisp PNG or a true vector SVG you can scale to any size.

How to Use

  1. Paste your data with three columns: State, Frequency, Percentage. Two letter codes (IL) or full names (Illinois) both work, and a header row is detected automatically.
  2. Choose whether to color the map by percentage or by frequency, and pick a color scheme.
  3. Set how the labels appear: the state abbreviation, the value, both, or none.
  4. Add an optional title and subtitle, pick a background, and toggle the legend.
  5. Click Download to save a high resolution PNG, a JPG, or a scalable SVG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I show the percentage directly on each state?

Yes. That is the whole point of Statescape. Set the labels to show the value or the abbreviation plus value, and the number is printed on every state, with callouts for the small states that are too tiny to hold a label.

My percentages are stored as 0 to 1 fractions, not percents. Will it still work?

Yes. Statescape auto detects whether your percentage column is a 0 to 1 fraction (like 0.378) or an actual percent (like 37.8), and you can override the choice if needed.

What happens to rows that are not US states, like a foreign country or an "OTHER" bucket?

Those rows are skipped and listed under the data box so you know what was left off the map. Only the 50 states and Washington DC are plotted.

Is the download free and watermark free?

Yes. Statescape is completely free, with no account and no watermark. You can export as many maps as you like as PNG, JPG, or SVG.
