Security and compliance usually arrive as a wall: a big customer’s security questionnaire, a SOC 2 or similar requirement, or a scare that makes everyone nervous. I help you meet it without overreacting. First I make sure you are actually secure in the ways that matter for your stage, then I get you ready for the specific compliance your customers and auditors are asking for.

No fear-selling and no enterprise theater. Just the controls that genuinely reduce risk and the paperwork that genuinely unblocks deals.

What it covers

  • An honest read of where you are actually exposed today
  • The security basics done right: access, secrets, data, backups
  • Right-sizing controls to your stage instead of an enterprise template
  • Getting ready for SOC 2, ISO 27001, and similar, where you need it
  • Answering customer security questionnaires without stalling deals
  • Data protection and privacy practices that hold up
  • A simple incident plan so a bad day does not become a disaster
  • Setting up the habits so you stay compliant, not just pass once

Who it’s for

  • Startups hit with a big customer’s security questionnaire
  • SMBs that need SOC 2 or ISO to sell upmarket
  • Teams who know security has been an afterthought and want it fixed

What you get

  • A written security and compliance assessment with risks ranked
  • A prioritized plan to close the gaps that matter
  • The core controls and documentation in place
  • Readiness for the specific certification your customers want
  • Reusable answers to the security questionnaires you keep getting

How it works

  1. 1

    Assess

I review how you handle access, data, secrets, and infrastructure, and where you are genuinely exposed.

  2. 2

    Prioritize

We rank the gaps by real risk and by what is blocking deals, and ignore the noise.

  3. 3

    Close the gaps

I put the important controls and documentation in place, or guide your team to.

  4. 4

    Get audit-ready

Where you need a certification, I get you ready for it and line up the evidence.

  5. 5

    Sustain

I set up the habits so staying compliant does not fall apart the week after the audit.

Security sized to your stage, not an enterprise checklist

The mistake I see most is a small company trying to adopt an enterprise security program it does not need, burning months on controls that do not reduce its actual risk, usually in a panic after a customer sent a questionnaire. The right approach is to separate the handful of controls that genuinely protect you at your size from the theater, close the real gaps first, and only then chase the certification the deal requires.

Finding the real gaps is its own exercise. A focused security review shows you how your product could actually be attacked, and if you are moving money, the rules get stricter fast and bleed into payments and fintech territory. I keep the paperwork proportional to the revenue it unblocks, so compliance stays a means to an end rather than the end itself.

Why work with me

I’m Matt George, a fractional CTO for SMBs and early-stage startups and the founder of the venture-backed legal-tech company Injuria.ai. I have built and shipped real products end to end, from scrappy MVPs to data and AI infrastructure running in production, so the advice here comes from doing the work rather than talking about it. You get a senior technical partner with nothing to sell you, no vendor kickbacks, and a bias toward shipping.

FAQ

Do we really need SOC 2 yet?

Maybe not. If no customer is asking and none is about to, I will tell you to wait and spend the money elsewhere. I only push certification when it actually unblocks revenue.

Are you an auditor?

No, and that is deliberate. I get you genuinely secure and audit-ready. An independent auditor then issues the certification, which keeps that signature honest.

Can you just help us answer a security questionnaire?

Yes. That is a common starting point, and it usually surfaces the real gaps worth fixing next.

Will this slow down our engineers?

Good security mostly removes risk quietly in the background. I aim for controls that are automatic, not ones that make your team fight friction every day.
