Architecture Review
Before you scale, hire, or raise, I give your architecture an independent once-over and tell you plainly what will break and what to fix first.
Systems that were fine at ten users quietly become the thing that breaks at ten thousand. An architecture review catches that before your customers or your investors do. I look at how your system is actually built, where it will strain as you grow, and what it would cost to fix, then hand you a report that ranks the problems so you fix the ones that matter first.
It is an independent read with no agenda to sell you a rebuild. Sometimes the honest answer is that you are fine and should keep shipping.
What it covers
- How the system is put together and whether that still fits
- Where it will strain or break as load and data grow
- Reliability and failure modes: what happens when something goes down
- How your data is stored, modeled, and backed up
- A security baseline sized to your stage
- Cloud and infrastructure cost, and where it is being wasted
- Integrations and third-party dependencies you are exposed to
- Whether you can actually see what is happening in production
Who it’s for
- SaaS teams about to scale up usage or customers
- Companies hitting performance or reliability problems
- Teams planning a migration, a raise, or a sale
What you get
- A written architecture review in plain language
- A ranked list of findings, worst-first, with quick wins marked
- A remediation plan with rough effort for each fix
- A target architecture where a bigger change is warranted
- A walkthrough with your team so the findings actually get acted on
How it works
- 1
Scope
We agree what to look at and what is keeping you up at night.
- 2
Access
I review the code, infrastructure, and whatever docs exist, and talk to your engineers.
- 3
Analyze
I map how it is built, where it strains, and what the real risks are.
- 4
Report
I write up findings ranked by severity, with fixes and effort estimates.
- 5
Walkthrough
We go through it together so your team leaves with a plan, not just a PDF.
What I look for before you scale
Scaling problems are almost always visible in advance if you know where to look: the one database everything funnels through, the sync job that quietly takes longer every week, the service with no owner that everyone is afraid to touch. A review is pattern-matching against the failure modes I have seen before, then ranking them by how likely they are to hurt you and how expensive they are to fix now versus later.
The review is also the honest input other decisions depend on. It is what a serious technical due diligence leans on when investors ask whether the product can reach the plan, and it is where a hands-on software and data engineering engagement often starts when the answer is that something specific needs to be rebuilt properly. Good architecture work tells you not just what is wrong, but what is fine and should be left alone.
Why work with me
I’m Matt George, a fractional CTO for SMBs and early-stage startups and the founder of the venture-backed legal-tech company Injuria.ai. I have built and shipped real products end to end, from scrappy MVPs to data and AI infrastructure running in production, so the advice here comes from doing the work rather than talking about it. You get a senior technical partner with nothing to sell you, no vendor kickbacks, and a bias toward shipping.
FAQ
How is this different from a code review?
A code review looks at the code line by line. An architecture review looks at the shape of the whole system: how the pieces fit, scale, and fail. I offer both and they complement each other.
Will this disrupt our team?
Minimally. I need some access and a few conversations, but your engineers keep shipping while I work.
What if the answer is a rebuild?
I will only say that if it is true, and I will show the reasoning and the cost. More often the answer is targeted fixes, not a rewrite.
Can you look at a multi-tenant or cloud setup?
Yes. Scaling, isolation, and cloud cost in multi-tenant systems are exactly the kind of thing this review is built to catch.
