About Roman Numerals to Number

This tool reads Roman numerals made of I, V, X, L, C, D, and M and returns the ordinary number they represent. It applies the standard subtractive rules, so IV reads as 4 and IX reads as 9.

It also validates the input, so a malformed numeral such as IIII or VX is rejected rather than quietly producing a wrong answer.

How to Use

  1. Type a Roman numeral, such as MMXXIV.
  2. Read the ordinary number in the output box.
  3. Click Copy to copy the result.
  4. Use the Number to Roman Numerals tool to convert back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Roman numeral invalid?

Numerals that break the standard rules, like writing four I letters in a row or putting a smaller value in the wrong place, are rejected so you do not get a misleading number.

Is it case sensitive?

No. You can type the letters in upper or lower case and the tool reads them the same way.

Is the tool private?

Yes. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
