About Profit Margin Calculator

Profit margin and markup are related but different. Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. This calculator shows both so you do not mix them up.

It is useful for pricing products, checking that a sale still makes money, and understanding how a given markup turns into a margin.

How to Use

  1. Enter the cost of the item.
  2. Enter the selling price.
  3. Read the profit, the profit margin, and the markup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit divided by the selling price. Markup is profit divided by the cost. The same profit gives a smaller margin than markup.

How do I price for a target margin?

Start from your cost and raise the price until the margin shown matches your goal. The figures update live as you change the price.

Is the tool private?

Yes. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
